Friends are chosen FAMILY
Thanksgiving is upon us and I can't help but think about all the family that is not longer around to enjoy it with - Mom, Dad, Aunts Irene,Goldie,Helen and Marie, both of my grandmothers, my close friend Pat -whom I dearly miss - and yes, I could go on and on. The memories live on in my heart. The silly "kitchen hats" there were required by my Aunt Irene to be worn in the kitchen as you prepared the meal. Any rag tired around your head or a paper towel bobby pinned to your hair so that no stray hairs would fall into the food, my Aunt Goldie and her fabulous meals, and my Aunt Marie with a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other - her favorite form of relaxation. Unfortunately, I never got to know my Aunt Helen very well. She rarely came to Virginia for a visit and my other aunts did so I bonded with them. There are new friends in my life now and they are my family. Each one different from the other - yet a common thread between us all. Sharon who claims she can't give one hundred percent of her love and self to anyone due to childhood hurts - yet, she practices such love and loyalty to her friends. All you need to say is a whispered "help" and she gives one hundred percent and then some. Pat, who keeps my laughing. She is one on the most honest and down to earth people I know and she knows how to keep a secret. Linda, who can be bossy and controlling, yet she is so loveable and doesn't give herself the credit she deserves. Elizabeth, who also makes me laugh and says what is on her mind. I love her for that. She shoots straight from the hip! Kathy is just plain crazy! I love her nutty comments and the fact that she is a walking encyclopedia. She has so much info filed in her brain and can tell you something about almost everything! Handy to have around. Susan who doesn't seem to trust herself and her own instincts. She is so giving and loving. It is a joy to watch her discover and recognize the "goodness" about herself. Then there is Noxie, I always thought we were polar opposites, however, throughout the years I have discovered that we are more alike than different. She is loyal, respects others feeling and opinions yet can make her point. She is more adventurist than she looks and enjoys a good laugh. Friends are simply chosen family and I love them one and all!
